Camp Randall

Where my grandfather's name is inscribed in an arch
and Civil War soldiers once learned how to march,
the cannon of bronze standing still in the park
and my child's face with no taint of the dark.

Yet even the 5 year old child surely knew
what cannons are and what cannons do,
how cannons roar and how horses die.
So even the child ought to know why.
